What Is Injection Molding?

Injection molding is a versatile manufacturing process where molten material (such as engineering-grade plastics, liquid silicone rubber (LSR), or multi-material composites) is injected into a precision-designed mold cavity. After cooling and solidification, the material takes the shape of the mold to achieve high-volume production of custom parts with consistent quality.

As a global injection molding service provider, First Mold operates dual manufacturing hubs in China and Mexico. We deliver end-to-end solutions from prototyping to mass production for startups, product design firms, prototype developers, and large enterprises.

Types of Injection Molding Technologies We Offer

While many associate injection molding solely with plastic parts, the technology encompasses a wide range of specialized processes such as plastic injection molding, metal injection molding, LSR, etc. At First Mold, we provide 5 types of injection molding services as below:

The standard method for high-volume production of durable consumer goods, automotive components, and housings using polymers like ABS, PC, or nylon.

Combines two materials in a single cycle for multicolored consumer products, wear-resistant gears, and waterproof industrial parts.

Embeds metal or ceramic inserts into plastic parts, used in electrical connectors, threaded fasteners, and sensor housings.

Bonds a soft material (e.g., TPE) over a rigid substrate, ideal for ergonomic tool grips, medical device buttons, and vibration-resistant seals.

Utilizes LSR for high-temperature medical devices, baby bottle nipples, and flexible automotive gaskets.

Injection Molding vs 3D Printing vs CNC Machining: How to Choose?

Injection molding, 3D printing, and CNC machining are common processes for producing plastic products, and there are certain principles for selecting the right service provider for each process.

3 Key Scenarios for Choosing Injection Molding:

Mass Production Demand

When the order exceeds 500 pieces, the per-unit cost of injection molding may be only 1/10 of 3D printing, and the delivery speed improves with larger batch sizes.

Material Performance Requirements

High-temperature resistance (>120°C) or elastomeric properties (such as silicone seals)

Brand Consistency

The appearance textures (leather grain/matte) and color matching at the mass production stage can only achieve 99% consistency through injection molding molds.

Injection Molding FAQ

How can you choose a proper injection molding service provider?

When choosing a suitable injection molding service provider, you need to consider many aspects all together.
First of all, look at the production capacity and equipment. Check if the specifications of the injection molding machines can meet the needs for the size and precision of your products. Also, see if the number of the machines and how automated they are can make sure that your orders will be delivered on time and the production can be done efficiently.
Secondly, pay much attention to the quality control system. For example, find out whether they have certifications like ISO 9001 or not, and check if their testing equipment and processes are all in good order.
Thirdly, think about the material supply and management. Make sure that they can provide the plastic materials you need, and that these materials are of good quality and are stored properly.
Besides, when it comes to the technical ability and experience, it's better to choose those who have experience in this industry and are really good at designing and making molds.
The service and response ability can't be overlooked either. The communication should be smooth and efficient, and there should be a guarantee for after-sales service.
Finally, balance the price and cost. Ask for clear quotations and choose the one that offers good value for money by taking into account product quality, production efficiency and other things. Only in this way can you pick out an injection molding service provider that suits your needs.

How can I tell if my design is suitable for the injection molding solution?

To figure out whether a design fits the injection molding solution, you need to think about these aspects: the product structure, the choice of materials and the product's performance, as well as the possibility of making the molds.
When it comes to the product structure, you should pay attention to whether the thickness of the walls is even. Try your best to make the differences in wall thickness as small as possible, so that you can avoid problems like uneven cooling and the product getting deformed. Design proper angles for taking the product out of the mold easily. Plan the strengthening ribs in a reasonable way to make the product stronger and prevent those ugly marks caused by shrinkage. And be careful when you design holes and grooves, and think about how their sizes and shapes will affect the injection molding process.
As for the choice of materials and the product's performance, you need to consider if the materials can flow smoothly to fill up the space inside the mold. You should pick materials that match the functions your product needs. At the same time, you also have to take into account what the product should look like and the features of the materials.
In terms of whether it's possible to make the molds, you must avoid designing structures that will make the molds too complicated. Otherwise, it'll cost a lot of money and be really hard to make them. Also, make sure that all the details in your design can be made with the tools and skills we have for making molds.

Does the injection molding service support small-batch production?

Of course it does. In terms of equipment and molds, First Mold has injection molding machines of different specifications. The small-sized injection molding machines are easy to install and debug, which is beneficial for small-batch production of small plastic products. And First Mold can use rapid molds to reduce costs.
On the aspect of cost and benefit, we will adjust the way of calculating costs for small-batch production. We will make reasonable pricing by taking into account raw material procurement, processing fees and so on. Meanwhile, in line with the personalized needs of the market, we will meet the needs of customer groups such as innovative enterprises and niche brands through small-batch production to gain benefits.

From the perspective of product design, how can we reduce the cost of future injection molding?

To cut down the cost of injection molding from the aspect of product design, there are three main points. Firstly, we need to optimize the product structure. That means keeping the wall thickness even and controlling the difference in wall thickness within 25% to shorten the injection molding cycle. Also, we should design the strengthening ribs reasonably. The thickness of the strengthening ribs should not exceed 60% - 70% of the wall thickness. In this way, we can enhance the product's strength while avoiding quality problems. Besides, we should design proper draft angles. The draft angle on the outer surface should be at least 0.5° - 1°, and that on the inner surface should be 1° - 2°. This can reduce the demolding time and prevent the product from being damaged.
Secondly, we need to optimize the choice of materials. We should select suitable materials according to the functions of the product to avoid wasting materials. Moreover, we have to consider the processability of the materials and choose materials with good fluidity to reduce energy and time costs.
Thirdly, we should integrate and simplify the design of parts. We can reduce the number of parts by integrating several parts into one whole for injection molding. And we should simplify the appearance design, avoid complex shapes and decorations on the outside. By doing so, we can lower the cost of molds and the difficulty of injection molding.
